Stay Motivated on Low-Energy Days: Lessons for Success

Dear past self,

Do you ever wake up and feel completely off, like you’re dragging through the day without any spark? Staying motivated on low-energy days can be tough, and I’m in the thick of one right now. My wife and daughter left for a 10-day trip to Europe yesterday, leaving me at home with our three younger boys. Last night I got to bed far later than planned, and this morning I had to get up early. Needless to say, I’m feeling it.

But here’s the deal—I can’t afford to let a day slip by. We’ve all had days like this. What sets us apart is how we handle them. Over the years, I’ve developed a few go-to strategies that help me shake off the cobwebs and get moving.

The Power of a Personal Mantra

For me, my ultimate motivator is a simple phrase I’ve repeated to myself countless times:

“Today is another opportunity to kick some as!”*

Excuse the language, but this phrase gets me going. There’s something about saying it out loud—or even just in my head—that flips a switch. It reminds me that every day offers too many opportunities to waste. When you’re dragging, it helps to have a mantra that resonates with you. It doesn’t have to be complex—just something that sparks a fire inside.

If you’re looking for ways to stay motivated on low-energy days, consider coming up with a personal mantra that inspires you to push through.

Quick Wins to Build Momentum

Sometimes, motivation doesn’t come from sitting and thinking about what needs to be done. It comes from action.

Here are a few quick wins I turn to:

  1. Run a small errand – Something simple, like grabbing a coffee or getting a car wash. Knocking something off your mental to-do list creates a small but satisfying sense of accomplishment.
  2. Move your body – A 15-minute walk, a quick workout, or even just stretching can work wonders for resetting your energy levels.
  3. Take a power nap – Sometimes, 20 minutes of rest is all you need to recharge.
  4. Connect with someone positive – A quick conversation with a colleague, friend, or family member can lift your spirits and shift your perspective.

These small actions can have an outsized impact. They’re simple but effective ways to stay motivated on low-energy days.

Find What Works for You

Motivational strategies aren’t one-size-fits-all. What works for me might not work for you, and that’s okay. The key is to experiment and find your own formula.

For example, on tougher days when my mantra alone isn’t enough, I rely on a few backups. Whether it’s a change of scenery, a little caffeine boost, or just taking a moment to breathe, I focus on changing my mindset. The goal is to find small, actionable steps that help you move forward—even when you’re dragging.

You’re Too Good to Waste a Day

Here’s the bottom line: You’re too good at what you do to let a day slip by unproductively. Even on the toughest days, there’s always something you can do to shift gears and make progress. Staying motivated on low-energy days takes practice, but it’s entirely possible with the right mindset and tools.

So, what’s your strategy? How do you motivate yourself on days when you’re just not feeling it? Share your tips—I’d love to hear what works for you!

Remember, today is another opportunity to kick some as*!

Sincerely,

Future Self
